HNA Travel Group Limited
Before answering this question, we need to clarify a concept-Hainan Airlines and HNA Group.
Hainan Airlines, called Hainan Airlines Co., Ltd., is one of the four major airlines in China. It has more than 200 passenger planes of various types, and has been rated as one of the three five-star airlines in China. It is well known for its red and yellow tail and flight code HU.
HNA Group is the parent company/superior unit of Hainan Airlines. It owns 18 airlines through holding or equity participation, with a total of 940 aircraft. HNA Group is a comprehensive large-scale enterprise group integrating air transport, tourism, logistics and finance.
Now, let's go back to the topic. Hainan Airlines is an independent airline, which does not own or participate in other airlines. However, HNA Group has participated in a number of domestic airlines, including:
1. Tianjin Airlines: It was jointly funded by HNA Group and Tianjin Municipal Government in 2009, with A330, A320 and E190 as the core fleet.
2. Capital Airlines: Formerly known as Jinlu Airlines Co., Ltd., in 2010, the Beijing Municipal Government and HNA Group jointly invested in asset restructuring and established a new Capital Airlines. At present, it has 86 aircraft.
3. Western Airlines: Yunnan Xiangpeng Airlines, which is controlled by HNA Group, was established in Chongqing in 2006 with joint investment from other companies. In 2013, it was transformed into a low-cost airline.
4. Xiangpeng Airlines: Originally a local airline in Yunnan, it was introduced into HNA Group for joint operation in 2008 and became a holding company under HNA Group, positioning itself as a low-cost airline.
5. Jin Lu Business Aviation: Focus on business jet operation.
6. Jin Peng Airlines: Yangzijiang Airlines Co., Ltd., one of the airlines under HNA Group.
7. Fuzhou Airlines: It was jointly funded by HNA Group and Fujian Provincial Government.
8. Urumqi Airlines: It was jointly funded by HNA Group and Xinjiang Autonomous Region Government.
9. Beibu Gulf Airlines: It was jointly funded by HNA Group and Guangxi Autonomous Region Government.
10. Changan Airlines: It was jointly funded by HNA Group and Shaanxi Provincial Government.
11. Guilin Airlines: It was jointly funded by HNA Group and Guilin Municipal Government.
In addition to participating in or holding shares in the above airlines, HNA Group has also set foot in hotels, restaurants, education, retail and other industries, becoming a large state-owned holding enterprise. In the domestic aviation industry, this business model of HNA Group is not uncommon, and Air China, China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines have also adopted similar strategies.
After experiencing the stage of diversified development, HNA Group began to sell non-main assets in the face of some business adjustments. Nevertheless, Hainan Airlines, its core business, still maintains good profitability and is the core asset of HNA Group.
As of February 2019, Hainan Airlines had 244 passenger planes, including various models of Boeing and Airbus. Since the opening of the first route from Haikou to Beijing in 1993, Hainan Airlines has gradually developed into an aviation giant.
HNA Group has acquired a number of airlines, but in the process of expansion, it also encountered some changes, which led to the change of ownership of some airlines. For example, Cathay Pacific acquired Hong Kong Express, so the management of HNA Group may quit. In 2006, HNA incorporated Hong Kong United Airlines into its subsidiary through investment holding, transformed into a low-cost airline company in 2013, and changed its name to Hong Kong Express in 2017.
Relying on the high-quality resources of the global aviation industry chain, HNA Group has built a modern aviation service system with air passenger transport, air freight and general aviation as the core, covering maintenance, training, ground service, aviation food, hotels and tourism, and is committed to serving people's yearning for a better life.
