In the tenth year of Guangxu in Qing Dynasty (1884), many French warships invaded Mawei and plotted Fuzhou. Fujian navy fought back, but was defeated by the French army because it was outnumbered, and 796 soldiers were killed. Mawei people gathered the bones of the fallen soldiers and buried them in Maxian Mountain, and built a memorial hall for Zhaozhong Temple.
